How to: Removing hidden thread from a sandwich

O.k., another How to. Because when I am quilting, always something pops up to post about!

Do you have that issue too? That you made the sandwich, already did some stitching, and then... oops! Colored thread caught in the sandwich, shining through brightly?

Happened to me with my class sample. Batting had some embroidery thread entangled. Bright yellow, peeking through, and because I already quilted around it, no way to get it out the easy way.

See here the culprit, right in the middle. left from the vertical purple stitches. As soon as I saw it, I could not not see it. So Operation Thread Hunter started.

Needed:
Ball point awl
Pointed tweezers
Nerves of steel
And focus, focus, focus.

Operation Thread Hunter starts here.

Step 1
Take the ball point awl and make a hole just on top of the thread that has to be removed.
The ball point awl is blunt, so no permanent holes, just fumbling it in.

Step 2
Get your ball point awl out, and make sure the hole stays open.

Step 3
Get your weapon of mass destruction: your pointed tweezers
Make sure no enemies are near.

Step 4
Carefully get the points of the tweezers in the hole and grab your thread.
Shout something like: Gotcha, you little ....! or words to the same effect.

There it is, the little rascal. Almost spoiled my work.

See? Nothing left after Operation Thread Hunter, not a scar, not a hole, nothing.
That's what we do. Work silently, unseen, in the shadow.
But very, very, very effective. Ha.

Another military operation fulfilled with precision. The home front will be proud. ;-)

Have fun quilting!

  1. Oh, you are such a rascal! LOL I love how you remove your threads. I just use the smallest crochet hook I have, poke that baby in, scoop up the thread, and pull back out, in one swift and stealth move.
