Decorate your Shoes, how it all started... Part 1

The last days were amazing. All reactions, the amount of visitors, people congratulating me on the boards and groups I'm on and in (the Dutch Prikbord, about.com, the handquilters yahoo group), it really is amazing. And although I just started on Pinterest, it was picked up there too.

And because my message on the what and how was on the short side last Friday, I'll tell you about what happened in Paducah, and how this book came into the world. It will be a bit of a long story, so have patience. I'll do it in 2 posts. Thursday you can read part 2.

I was definitely not planning for a book. I was planning for quilt show. First, in 2009, I went to Houston, and as you might have read in a former post, I decorated my shoes to have a fun pair to walk on. My spouse thought I was crazy to "spoil" a pair of almost new leather Birkenstocks. And in the office store they were looking at me to check whether the light was on, and whether somebody was home. Would permanent markers be fit to decorate leather??? It took me some time to work out a good way, but then it was done in a few hours. In Houston the shoes were already a communication item, but I was so NOT prepared for what happened in 2011 in Paducah.

In Paducah it wasn't possible to walk for me for more than 10 minutes, without being asked, complimented and whatever about my shoes. A whole guild came to me, spoke to me for 45 minutes, wanted my shoes next to my head (remember, I walked for almost 3 days on them...), wanted autographs, instructions, everything. I literally spent hours talking about my shoes.
On Saturday I decided to put a silly hat on.That would distract from my shoes, as I had no other shoes. But JoAnne from PaperPieces.com saw my shoes and went crazy over them. She wanted them there, on the spot. And when I spoke to her about all the people that were coming to me, her light went on. JoAnne contacted Gloria Bolden from AQS to come to her booth, where I was.
Gloria saw my shoes and just said: Come with me.

In two days the rest of the story!

Have fun quilting!
